My dad didn't enjoy his retirement either. Too sedentary, glued to the TV, no social, mental, emotional stimulation. Nothing to look forward to. It breaks my heart. He is passed now. But he just couldn't seem to step up for himself and create a fulfilling life. 😢

You are correct. Thriving as a solo retiree takes effort. But the effort is worth it. Building a community takes time. Since I retired 6 months ago, I have a small community thru church. Seems like 2 lunches out a week. My exercise is walking my dog. Television is on in the evening. For the next nine months doing travel. Once my travel is done, will be volunteering at a food back. I think making future plans works best for me. I have one cruise coming up and then 4 trips through March 2025. I can spend time researching the places I am going. I enjoy all the suggestions you two offer,

I'm 60 not retired yet. Retiring age 67. Right now I'm just part-time as a caregiver. I also run a flea market booth over the weekend. I also know how to repair PC's and Laptops. I even know how to build websites. So love to hustle for a buck. Kinda retire right now, but I'll slow down even slower at the age 67. So relax more, but still hustle for sure.

Nice comments on retirement. Jody, you and I were in the same HS graduating class. I have the money to retire but plan to go out gradually. I have saved on my own at the max and have diversified my money on my own. I do like your ideas of how to visualize retirement. I have been so laser focused on my career, but will now focus on the future. Thanks for your channel!

I've saved enough for retirement and have been retired for 6 years now, and my investments are all up in value. I worked for fortune 500 companies who had pensions, but I took them out and rolled them over to my financial planner too where they have gained substantially. I had always heard save, save, save - pay yourself first, etc. etc. I think that is fine, but not near enough. If you want to live a long time to enjoy the fruits of your labor/saving, then exercise is important, as is making smart health choices. Where I failed was to plan was where to live in my retirement, how to actually take my $$$ out in distributions, understanding RMD better, and how to maximize my SS (which I did OK on that). I had financial planners for most of my adult life, but not necessarily a fiduciary (I learned that the hard way). I like your concept of defining your vision for retirement, as that is something I did not do. As result I wound up wondering my first few years. I finally found something I am passionate about which is writing books. I have 3 published and working on my 4th. But that is only part of the vision I am now working upon. I do think you should build a vision course/videos to help those like me, but especially those starting out on this journey. Thank you for the video. I wish you all the best.

Thanks for sharing a great video. I am in the final few months to retire early at 55 and have worked with a financial planner for about 18 years. They have been extremely helpful and set us up for a successful retirement. I also agree on having some sort of vision for your retirement. Imagine one that contains faith / spirituality, friends, financial, fitness, family and a collection of hobbies. Doesn’t that sound great?!

I couldn’t agree more. Selling our home of 31 yrs. 18,000 sq ft of grass, in ground pool, 3000 sq ft. ,2 stories, 100’ driveway to clear in winter, talk about maintenance. Moving into a 1/4 acre ranch home in a great location. My wife was very reluctant to sell but the numbers made sense and honestly, I am tired of the upkeep…kids are long gone. Cant wait for this new chapter. Get rid of your crap people.

Here’s a suggestion regarding inherited china. I bring out the plates I inherited from my great-grandmother when my kids and grandchildren visit. While we eat, we take a moment to remember where we’ve come from and I tell a quick story about her to help keep her name alive. She died at age 97 when I was a teen. When a plate breaks we simply sweep it up and away. The plates aren’t important but they are a catalyst for the stories.

I’m 79 retired twenty years and we build our life around exercise. This week we are in Andermatt, Switzerland cycling and hiking. Yesterday we cycled the old cobbled road over the St Gotthard pass, it was fantastic because the road is cleared of snow but still closed to traffic so we ducked under the barrier, we didn’t see a soul all the way down and only a couple of other cyclists on the way back up. Today we took the train to Goschenen and walked back, incredible the river is in full force. It all started when I was fifty, overweight, out of shape, stressed and a smoker. We bought a couple of cheap bikes and started with the local park then gradually day rides, weekends, every holiday. touring. When we retired we took our bikes to Europe for a few weeks every year touring a different country each time and to cut a long story short eventually came to live in Switzerland. Exercise is so important to a long and healthy retirement, so far we only see the doctor once a year for a checkup.

I started saving and investing for retirement in my mid-20s. My father told me the SS payments from my check were for his and my mother's retirement. There would be nothing from SS for me. And I had to fund my retirement via my own savings and investments. I took his word to heart and did just that. Now, at retirement, the picture looks good. We have a lot of money saved and invested since we started in our 20s. And it looks like SS will stick around for a bit longer. I suggest others operate on the same assumption. The worst that can happen is you have extra money when you get to retirement.

It all depends on what you are retiring with and your debt burden in retirement. If you have no debt and have good cash flow, I don’t necessarily see these items as issues. I don’t think I’ll ever own a boat because of cost of ownership. As far as a new or good car, I don’t really want to be much older and being broken down on side of road.

"Constantly going through the decluttering process".. spot on. And the the hardest to get rid of items are the ones we have attached sentimental value and worth to. But, hanging on to "junk" can also occur.. the rationale being it's too expensive to replace.. I might NEED this some day,, basically an entitlement mentality - based on fear. Ohh, yes, many's the 3AM in the morning I'm awake.. trying to figure out how to deal with STUFF. My son moved out nearly 10 years ago.. taking exactly 2 suitcases and 2 tool boxes.. and leaving behind nearly everything else. So, now I have to spend 100's of $$ to take HIS stuff and junk to him.. because he refuses to deal with this issue.. rather than just sell or toss it. He gets 3 months free storage.. the rest is up to him. I've had friends who moved and threatened to put all their offspring's "left behind" junk out on the curb.. to make them show up. Guess I'm too much of a nice dad.. Thanks for doing this video.
